Folklore Book Tag // aka me reviving my inner teenage fangirl

Hi friends! Hope everyone is doing well and hanging on during this wild reading rush. I just finished my seventh and final book for the week, so I’m celebrating by turning my reading brain off and my Taylor Swift stan brain on (duh).

This awesome tag was created by Ilsa over at A Whisper of Ink, and I’m so grateful that she took the time to make this because it was so so much fun to answer!

I’ve been obsessed with folklore since it’s release and don’t imagine I’ll stop listening nonstop for like….10 years, maybe? šŸ˜‰

This song was the first I listened to on the album and it slaps. I love how melancholy it is while also maintaining a lighter air. 10/10 recommend.

This is my first reaction, so I’m gonna roll with it (event though every time I include an SJM book I feel the need to add a disclaimer). This book literally left me with my mouth hanging open in shock. There are SO many twists, turns, and revelations, and I can’t believe Miss. Maas let us hanging on like that for a whole year before KoS.

THIS SONG. GETS ME. Omg I love this, probably my favorite on the album?? Maybe?? The more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it, and the music video is spectacular.

Don’t get me wrong, I adored Felix Ever After. I know this is a book about finding your community and your inner strength and for those reasons it made me feel happy, but I couldn’t help but feel this constant pang of sadness at Felix’s loneliness and sense of lost self throughout. Cardigan vibes? Me thinks so.

The second I heard the words “St. Louis” in the first line, I was hooked. Midwest rep!! The story of this song is so much fun and I love how Taylor plays on her own life while also kiiiiinda making fun of herself.

I know it’s a huge cliche, but this story is just unparalleled. There will be nothing that can come close to the seven years I spent with Harry and squad, and going back to reread the books only shows me how well she who must not be named was able to leave clues for us to find much later. Despite my disagreement with it’s author, I think it’s inarguable that HP will always be an amazing story.

I don’t…love Bon Iver? Is that going to get me *heh* exiled?? The more I listen to this song, the more it grows on me, but I admittedly don’t think it’ll ever be a favorite.

Gosh, I feel so mean saying this! I just didn’t enjoy Always Never Yours, but I pushed through because I thought “hey, maybe this will get better and not be a giant waste of my time!” (Plot twist: it didn’t.) I just wish I would’ve listened to my gut after the first 100 pages and DNF-ed.

This song is, like, peak melancholy? But also kinda creepy if you listen to what Taylor actually says about it.

Okay, I totally cried at this one. I don’t cry easily as books, and this is probably one of the only two that have made me shed real tears this year. If you haven’t read the Wolf by Wolf series, I highly highly recommend.

In all honesty, I’ve only listened to this song twice, so I can’t make too many comments on it.

They say that reading is all about finding stories that you relate to, but I’m really struggling to think of a book for this prompt? I guess if I had to choose, I’d probably say The Summoning series, because they were the books that got me into reading (to the extent that I do now, at least!) and introduced me to anything other than children’s and middle grade books! And nobody talks about them. They might not be ~the best~, but they’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

The very last song I listened to on the album, I was expecting to love this and instead felt very “meh”. I’m actually going to put it on now to refresh my memory.

See above!!! If I have to pick another, though, I’m going classic with Percy Jackson. I read in middle school right after I finished the Twilight series, and it saved me from a tremendous reading slump.

My favorite!! This song definitely makes the top three list from this album. I love the upbeat(ish) vibe and how it ties into the trilogy of songs that she wrote about the high school love triangle.

Christina Lauren is the summer romance author to me, and everything about this book reminds me of summer. Tropical vacation setting? āœ“ Fun & vibrant cover? āœ“ Fluffy love story? āœ“āœ“āœ“ This duo will always remind me of summer – even if their next story is set during the holidays.

This song is probably the most sincere, and also the saddest, on the whole album to me. It’s so honest and so vulnerable, and I’m sure we can all relate to some degree.

I just finished this book, but I definitely think it fits this prompt well. Michael struggles with his identity and his place in the world, and it’s evident throughout the story that he feels a lot of loneliness while he searches for where he fits best!

I love this song so much. I love her pitch changes and the acoustic guitar in the background of it all. Ugh.

I’ve been blessed to avoid the dreaded reading slump for the past year, so I can’t think of any that have put me into a huge hangover. I’ve definitely missed the characters from The Kiss Quotient & The Bride Test! I found these stories so much fun and so perfectly sweet, I can’t wait for the third one.

“Green was the color of the grass where I used to read at Centennial Park” Reading? At the park? Is this….me?

I’m gonna repeat, I’m sorry. But this is so true! I was, like, thirteen, and had just finished Breaking Dawn, and thought that my life was over because I no longer had Edward Cullen to fill every free moment. But then I picked this one up, and I forgot all about that tired vampire in my haste to fall in love w/ Percy Jackson. Whoops!

Another gorgeous, honest song that rips straight at the heart of any woman who listens. I could literally feel her anger and resentment in this one. Top 5, for sure.

I have a lot of rom-com books on here, don’t I? I almost put Celaena from ToG, but I decided that was too predictable for me. Lucy was probably one of the first girls in a romance that I could actually see parts of myself in – she’s far from your normal romantic heroine and isn’t shy about her flaws and shortcomings. I really respected her for that, and fell in love with her story!!

I think this song sums up the vibe and the emotion behind folklore really well. That haunting melody paired with the vocals detailing trying times? Very timely.

I’m going more literal with this one – The Diviners is definitely a bit creepy, and leaves you with shivers and goosebumps. It’s not an all-out horror or thriller, but it’s got elements from both and I think it leaves you feeling very shook!

I’m getting Fearless & Speak Now vibes from this one!! It’s got a little bit more of a country twang, and I like it. But also, James, you suck.

Do I even really need to explain this one?

Peace is probably the most gorgeous song on this album, in my opinion! It’s so honest and I connected with it so much when I first listened to it. It gave me heavy ~dark, brooding love interest~

My sweet summer child, Henry. I just want him to be at peace and have a family who loves him and a country who adores him and a boyfriend who worships the ground he walks on and just yes. I’m so happy he and Alex are living their blissful political lives together.

At this point, I just couldn’t believe I’d reached the end of the album! I think the piano is just gorgeous.

Listen, I didn’t hate it. I just expected to love it so much more than I did!! I will still keep it and recommend it, but it wasn’t a “I love this so so much” book, much to my utter disappointment.

Well, that’s that!! I hope you guys are all enjoying the album, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on which songs you like, what book you associate them with, etc!

If you want to do this tag, consider this your *official* tagging! (: Thanks again to Ilsa for spending time creating this, it’s such a fun way to combine Tswift & reading!!

Until next time, happy listening! (: xx

YES like exile is good but just not top tier, especially since the whole album is amazing, it’s hard to compete!!

Definitely try Always Never Yours, it was cute just not my favorite! I loved their other book though, If I’m Being Honest!! Id recommend that one over Always Never Yours, but I hope you love them both šŸ„° Can’t wait to see your thoughts on Diviners, I’ve only actually read the first but I can’t wait to read the rest!! I loved reading your answers for this, Erin!! You putting Percy Jackson on here twice is such a mood because it just is maximum nostalgia, but also has the best characters and witty dialogue so basically works for every prompt ever.šŸ˜

I kind of feel you on Exile!! Kind of because it’s ended up being one of my favorites on the album actually and has grown on me a LOT, but I remember the first time I listened to it not absolutely obsessing over it as I did with a lot of the other songs. Cardigan has my heart *cries*, but then, again so does this whole album.

Hmm maybe I need to keep listening to Exile and hope it’ll become a fave!! I’m so happy that you love the album, it’s *chefs kiss* pure gold!! (:
