Reading Habits Tag // Am I average?? I think so.

Hi guys! SO, today I’m going to be doing the Reading Habits Tag, which I believe was created by TheBookJazz on Youtube, though I can no longer find the original video! I saw this post on Intisar’s Blog, and thought it would be a really fun post! (:

So, without further ado, here we go!

I read mostly at home, because obviously we’re in the middle of a pandemic and thus I’m not leaving the house as much! I also just find that I get super distracted if I try to read in public (if I sit outside I’m often too focused on the ants crawling on me than on the book, sadly).

I do like audiobooks for when I’m in public though, because then I’m able to look around me and stay somewhat alert!

I’m….not opposed to it? I wouldn’t say that I necessarily HAVE to be eating or drinking while reading, though if I’m hungry I’ll grab a lil snack and eat while I read. I also love to have a mug of tea at night when I’m reading, but that’s not an every night thing! (I’m trying to be better about drinking water, so I often just have my water bottle near when I’m reading).

I do!! I have a chair in my living room that I love to read in, it’s surrounded by natural light and is just really cozy to read in during the day! (pictured right). At night, I tend to set up a little fort on my bed and curl up there! I have kind of a weird thing about sometimes wanting to read in private if I’m able to find the space to – I just like being able to disconnect from everything for awhile without any distractions!

Oh, one book. I wish I was someone who could read multiple at once, but I’m just too much of a mood reader to ever finish a book that way!! Props to those who can, though.

I have to stop at a chapter, or at a clean break in the story. Unless it’s really dire, like I only have a few minutes to squeeze in a few pages and have to stop whenever my time is up! Otherwise, I stop at chapter breaks (which is problematic when I have a book with super long chapters!).

(I find that if a book has really short chapters, I’m more likely to read more in one sitting, weirdly enough!)

Usually receipts, honestly. Right now my bookmark of choice is a month-old Barnes & Noble cafe coupon that came with my receipt. I do have bookmarks, but sometimes they end up smushed or crinkled, and I just don’t want to spend money on gorgeous Etsy bookmarks if they’re going to end up mangled!

In my head. I live with my family, so if I started reading out loud I think i’d frighten them half to death. If I’m having trouble focusing or processing a scene, I’ll read it out loud, though!

You think my brain is that powerful?? Heeeeck nah! I occasionally listen to a reading or smooth jazz playlist if I’m feeling in a ~music~ mood.

Not unless I really dislike the book or I’m feeling really emotionally wrecked and have to know what happens (usually just who dies) for the sake of my own emotional sanity. I know myself well enough to know that if I skipped pages and read ahead, I wouldn’t go back to read the rest of the story I skipped and would probably become the most chaotic reader you’ve ever seen.

I’m not careful or graceful enough to keep the spine intact for the entirety of a reading, so definitely break. Though I don’t really notice these things – I just read!

No, I don’t. But I’ve seen some really good discussions and arguments as to why writing in your books is actually really neat and a great practice, so it’s not something I’m adamantly opposed to! I just hate my handwriting and would probably screw up the book royally and it would bug me for the rest of eternity. I think I’ll start with some sticky tabs and move up from there.

Well my friends, there’s that!! I promise I’ll have some reviews up in the next week – I’m currently reading Boyfriend Material and can’t wait to post a rave review!!

If you liked this post and want to do this tag, consider this my official tagging of you!! DO it!! Otherwise, what are some of your unique reading habits that you think would shock most readers? Or are you pretty average like me?

I really enjoyed reading your answers to this! I agree–the only time I really ever multitask while reading is if I’m listening to an audiobook while cooking or something. Otherwise, I try to just focus on the book in front of me!

    • erin

Aw thank you! 🥰 Yes! It’s just so hard to focus on anything else while reading, I like to get lost in the world in front of me!!

  • Ruby Rae Reads

Rin, I loved reading this post so much! So calming. YES I also cannot eat and read. Like HOW?? Are you not terrified of smudging the pages?? Those people need to teach us their ways. But I do also usually also have tea at night 🙂 I also can’t read two books at once, at least not physically. I can do an audiobook and a physical read, they just have to be different genres and I’m sometimes not always in the mood.

Also I can sometimes read in public with people talking around me, but I don’t always feel like it. Which is maybe cool idk hehe. I also used to be terrible at SPOILING myself. If it was a big series with a wiki page, sometimes I’d by accident spoil myself when looking for like a fact or something and it’d say “deceased”. And then I’d be deceased lmao. But I also may or may not have done it on purpose welp. I HAVE TO KNOWWWWW

OMG YESSS BOYFRIEND MATERIAL!! I really loved that book xoxo Loved this post <3<3

YES about the books in different genres – if I’m reading to a fantasy and listening to a fantasy it just does NOT end well. Also totally get the whole eating thing – smudging the pages with food is probably more tragic than misspelling a world while annotating, honestly.

Omg I accidentally did that w/ the Six of Crows Wiki page (iykyk) and was SO upset so now I usually don’t let myself look ahead!! But ugh sometimes the emotional angst of not knowing is too much!!

      Thank you so much!! 🥰

  • Kaya

I loved reading yor post!! LOL I am the total opposite but also the same: I’m such a mood reader that I physically can’t read one book at once! I have to cover multiple genres, it’s so weird hehe. Great post!

    • erin

Yeah I feel like some people are just so much more able to read more than one, I’m jealous!! Thank you!! 🥰

  • Corina

    That’s a fantastic tag!!!

I use recipes too – lol. And I have a similar set up like you, a comfy chair but also love to read in bed. I actually can stop anywhere as long as I know where I stopped. And I do skip and skim if the book doesn’t fascinate me, and now hold on because here comes the biggest shocker, I sometimes read the ending first 😬

    • erin

Receipts are SO easy! Buy a book? There ya go, easy bookmark! OMG wow that is definitely a shock, I can’t even imagine reading the ending first!! It’s cool that you have the discipline to do that and then go back and read the rest of the book, honestly!!

I love this tag and I love your graphics! I tend to read better at home too, reading outside was just too distracting for me 😀 When I’m reading e-books, I tend to eat and drink while reading but when I’m reading physical, I try not to eat sticky foods haha. Great post! 🙂

    • erin

thank you!! ❤️ Totally get that, I’ve had way too many coffee drip incidents to not be hesitant to eat/drink while reading! (:

  • Joss @theonewhoreadit

I loved reading your answers on this tag! Oh yes, I don’t like annotating either because I honestly don’t know what to write and I am sure that it would be soo cringy to ever reread my annotations. But I do use sticky tabs! HAHA I also use receipts (even if I have at least 10 bookmarks from Book Depository but let’s just ignore that)! Great post!

    • erin

Thank you!! ❤️ Right! Like I don’t have much to say while I’m reading, so I feel like all my annotations would be so forced! I def want to try sticky tabs sometime, though!!(:

  • Emme

Ahh I loved reading this post!!
I’m actually the same with using receipts as bookmarks – mainly because I mostly read ebooks so I don’t need fancy bookmarks, but also because I love when the receipt paper gets all crinkled haha.
I also don’t really like annotating books – I hated doing it for english lit! I think the main reason is because the gaps between the lines is so small so even though my handwriting is super small, there’s no room to write??And then it just looks messy!

    • erin

thank you!! 🥰 yes!! some people have the best handwriting and can make writing in books look so artful and fun, but mine just looks like I tried too hard haha!!

  • Olivia @ Purely Olivia

This is such a fun tag and I loved reading your answers to it!! I related so much to the part about worrying about ants if you read outside, haha. I have tried so many times to read in my yard on a blanket or chair or something and I end up just being concerned about bugs and neglecting the book…oh well. :’) Haha, I love that you use receipts as bookmarks (and the Barnes & Noble one is very fitting). I have a collection of bookmarks that are mostly from elementary or middle school book fairs and somehow are still not torn apart, but I definitely will also use random spare piece of paper or anything else if I’m not near my bookmark drawer.

    • erin

Bugs are the bane of my existence, like why we can’t have a nice lil reading bubble free from insects is unclear to me but ugh such is life! Thats actually adorable wow that’s so neat that you have those old bookmarks and can keep them in tact without bends/tears! I’m jealous!!

  • El

Can we just have a minute of silence for all the books that have no chapters & are just continuous? BECAUSE I WILL FIND & KILL THEM
Whoever thought no chapters was a good idea needs to just stop like it’s the worst reading experience since I’m like you & need to stop at chapter ends!

    • erin

Omg wait I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that didn’t have chapters in them that is BLASPHEMOUS I’m horrified!! I genuinely don’t think I could read a book like that because it’d stress me out so much wow!!
