Synopsis:

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why–or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch–and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

In all honesty, this probably isn’t something I would’ve picked up if not for the fact that I was on the blog tour. I’m not a huge YA mystery reader, and while the synopsis of this looked intriguing, I’m just not sure it would’ve made it to the top of my TBR list!

Boy, am I glad it did.

I devoured this book. I read it within, like, 24 hours of receiving it. Even though I received a Netgalley copy, I also bought it on Audible and then went out to good ole’ Barnes and Noble and purchased a finished print copy. Does that tell you enough?

  • The mystery: Wow is this mystery intriguing. We have Avery, who is a teenager struggling to make ends meet after her mother dies, who suddenly inherits billions of dollars from this eccentric man she’s never met. Why? We have no idea!! I don’t give mystery books nearly enough credit, because this one had me flipping page after page just to get to the bottom of it.
  • Avery: So as part of the inheritance contingency, Avery must go live at Hawthorne House, the old man’s house of which his four teenager-ish grandsons currently inhabit. With so many characters, I was worried that Avery’s personality and development would get lost in the fray. BUT it didn’t! I really enjoyed her and was actually rooting for her as our MC, even though she’s got a lot stacked up against her.
  • The Hawthorne Boys: Ugh, I wish I was suddenly stuck in a house with four magnetic and attractive boys (even if they miiiiiight be trying to kill me). I loved each of these boys. I was expecting to be pitted against them due to the nature of the plot, but I really liked them all regardless.
  • The uncertainty of it all: Who’s the real villain? Who can we trust? What are we looking for, and what are we hoping we find? I never had a clear grasp on any of this, and I loved it!! On my toes, for every second of this read.
  • A bit confusing in the beginning: I mean, obviously things are going to take some getting used to when our MC is all of a sudden thrown into this crazy world of wealth, but there were SO many new characters introduced at one time that I was a bit overwhelmed. I had to flip back a few times to remind myself who everyone was. This is a small complaint, though, and once I got more immersed in the story, it was a lot easier to keep up with!

In the end, I loved this. If you’re new to YA mystery or a seasoned pro, don’t hesitate to pick this one up. It’s immersive, fast-paced, addictive, and that ending will leave you groaning in frustrating that book two isn’t out yet! But when it is, you can bet I’ll have it on pre-order.

Do you like YA mystery/thriller? Do you plan on picking this one up?
