Books I’d Love to Read for Halloween but Probably Won’t Because I’m Unpredictable

Hello, ~spooky~ friends!

Welcome to our favorite time of the year….fall. For a lot of readers, more specifically, Halloween!

I’m writing this snuggling up with my puppy on the couch with my cozy sweatpants and a fire roaring in front of me. I also just made banana bread, so the entire house smells absolutely delicious. When I bring in fall, I bring in fall.

Anyways, I’ve realized that I have so many books on my TBR that just scream Halloween. So, I decided to compile them all into a neat lil’ list so I can look back on November 1st and see how many books I didn’t read!! (Haha, hopefully just kidding! But I’m such a mood reader that I just can’t commit).

Stalking Jack the Ripper: I’m actually reading this now! Just picked it up today, and I’m so hooked. Thomas Cresswell is nothing like I imagined him and I….love it? I can’t wait to see where this story goes, it’s so creepy and gory!

The Beautiful: This book and I have been through it. I was like “ohh that cover, I’m gonna read it ASAP” and then the Goodreads reviews turned me off. BUT, I’ve come full circle and I have it sitting on my shelf. Vampires are so spooky and fall-like, so I definitely want to get to it this October!

Cemetery Boys: …need I say more? This gorgeous, gorgeous book is waiting for me to read this October, and I will NOT let it down.

The Poppy War: Ugh, I went out and bought this on a whim, and I really really do want to read it, but I’m so scared. Everyone who has read this has been utterly wrecked by it, and I’ve never read a grim-dark fantasy before! I just need to steal myself and power through, especially since the conclusion comes out next month. Stay tuned.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: I didn’t realize that came out next Tuesday?! I have it on pre-order – it just totally embodies fall vibes to me. I’ve heard a lot of people say that this wasn’t what they expected, so I’m trying to lower my expectations. I really hope it will surprise me!

If We Were Villains: Does this cover not scream scary vibes? I *think* this is dark academia, and since I don’t have any hopes of reading The Secret History anytime soon, I’m feeling like this will be a good place to start!

Bear Town: Alright, I’ll admit, this one drew me because of the hockey. I come from a family of skaters – my grandpa played, my dad and brother play, and I skate, too! I’ve never read a Fredrik Backman book, but I’m really drawn to this town and the dark story that seemingly unfolds. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a Halloween book, but I think it’d be a good one to transition into the winter season.

The Picture of Dorian Gray: I read this in high school and only remember vague details, but I’d really love to read more classics and this one seems like the perfect seasonal choice!!

Well my dear readers, those are the books that I’d ideally love to read this month for spooky season. Will I read them all? Half? Any? Only time will tell!

What books are you hoping to get to this October? Any that I just HAVE to read??

I made it my goal this month to read as many hyped books (that I haven’t read yet) as possible, but I’ll probably throw in some thrillers and such to get that spooky vibe going. I’ve been wanted to read Cemetery Boys and Blood and Honey as well!

You have so many incredible books listed here! I loved Cemetery Boys and The Poppy War, and I really enjoyed If We Were Villains and The Picture of Dorian Grey. (I also want to reread the latter, because I read it ages ago.) I read A Man Called Ove, my first book by Backman last month, and I loved it so much! I’m planning on reading Bear Town soon-ish. Hope you’ll enjoy all these books! (Also, I relate to not being able to follow a set tbr, haha.)

The Poppy War & Cemetery Boys are def top of the list, the hype is wild!! I can’t wait to get to them (: I didn’t realize Backman had SO many books out but I suddenly want to read them all…happy to hear that you enjoyed A Man Called Ove!! Maybe I’ll put that one on my ~winter~ TBR! ♥♥

This blog post’s title is a whole mood, haha. I can’t totally relate to that. 😂👍🏼 SJTR is great! I am glad to hear that you picked it up. I love the whole series (especially the 2nd one) and Thomas has become one of my all-time favourite characters. Most of the other books are on my want-to-read list such as The Invisble Life of Addie La Rue or If We Were Villains (I want to read DARK ACADEMIA BOOKS YES). 🖤

I feel so ~mysterious~ by saying unpredictable when in reality I’m just lazy 😂😂 I LOVED SJTR, I read your comment right before starting book 2 and now I’m SO excited!! Like boarding school?? Creepy killings?? A cute clueless British sidekick?? Give me all of it!! ♥♥

Omg Erin, I FELT that title deep into my soul lmao. I usually always do like a Spooky Season tbr post, well at least I’ve done it every year for a while, but I’ve decided not to because I also fail at it. Plus I just feel like reading whatever haha. Anyways, best of luck with this and I ~hope~ you do manage to read them all.

I am DEFINITELY planning on reading Addie LaRue also, welp it comes out soon and I need to get on my eARC asap. And I’ve only read SJTR off this list, which I got to last year, and its a ton of fun. Not mind-blowing in my opinion and book three is a whole mess, but yeah. I really enjoyed it. Oh, almost forgot, I have read Dorian Gray too, also for school. And I’ve been wanting to reread it bc I feel like reading it for school ruined the experience for me as I had to force myself to read it 🙁

Oh totally feel ya, set TBR’s are fun in concept, but a chore in practice!! 😅 Who needs em!!

I finished SJTR in one day and ADORED it like did not expect to love it so much but oop!! Hopefully that’s a good sign for the rest of my spooky books! Omg I’m so jealous of the Addie arc, I hope you love it tons!! ♥♥

I adored If We Were Villians when I read it yearrs ago, I hope ou enjoy it! I thankfully have Cemetary Boys on its way to me and I have The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue preordered and I am hoping to get to it this month. My main halloween reads this month are Frankenstein, The Only Good Indians, and a book of ghost stories that onl take place around where I live.

I hope your October is wonderful!

Those reads sound SO amazing, you’re way braver than I am for reading ghost stories, haha! Ugh cannot wait to get to Cemetery Boys and Addie LaRue, perfect spooky fall vibes!! Hope you love them! ♥ ♥

  • Jennifer

I’m challenging myself with an actual tbr to follow this month that’s all spooky themes like witches and vampires and thrillers. It’s weird to have s schedule, but I’m also really excited about all the books I have on it! ☺️ Good luck with your to-maybe-read list lol you’ll get then eventually 🤪

    • erin

Oooh I feel like this month is the perfect time to do it!! Sending all the good reading vibes, from one fellow mood reader to another 😂❤️

  • Joss @maybeivereadit

Aaaah WOW did I miss reading your posts (college is a mess right now). Anyway, so many of the books you’ve mentioned are also books that I REALLY want to read! Cemetery Boys, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and The Poppy War are at the top of my TBR and I can’t wait to get to them!! I would love to read Mexican Gothic too! It sounds like a great book to read in October. I hope you’ll get to read all these books, but most importantly that you’ll end up loving them!!

  • Caro @ bookcheshirecat

I really enjoyed Stalking Jack the Ripper when I read it a couple of years back, so I hope you like it too! 🙂 I’m also SO excited for Cemetery Boys, I’ve heard nothing but good reviews for it!!

  • Westveil Publishing

I need to get Cemetery Boys read, too! I have it in my Kobo library, but I have so many ARCs and tour reviews to read I’m not sure when I’ll have time to leisure print reading so I’ve put a hold on the audiobook through Libby.

    • erin

Totally get that – so many books to read, not enough time in the day, haha! Hope you love it when you get to it! ♥

  • Ali

It’s so cool that you can skate! I can’t balance on skates for the life of me. 😅 I wasn’t sure about Beartown, but I ended up loving it. I’m so interested to see how you feel about The Beautiful if you do end up getting to it. I want to check out the sequel, but also don’t know if I’ll end up actually reading it anytime soon. Too many books!!

    • erin

Aw glad you liked Beartown – it’s one that’s been wobbling on the edge of my TBR for a bit now so I’m def gonna have to pick it up soon (: Yes cannot wait for The Beautiful!!! I hope you get to The Damned soon so I can read your thoughts once I finish! ♥
